The basis for the introduction of a PMO is a clear objective based on an analysis of the core problems to be solved. Only with a common, deep understanding of the problems to be solved and the definition of the objective can a meaningful decision be made for the necessary measures and the PMO type required for this. Vision and mission statements, together with measurable success criteria, serve to ensure goal-oriented prioritization and implementation of the measures.
The overarching goal of every PMO is to create the basis for decisions. Decisions by those responsible for the right measures at the right time based on reliable information (figures, data, facts).
There are five main types of PMO. These can also be implemented in an overlapping manner. For example, a strategic PMO at the corporate level can control out underlying departmental PMOs, an overarching competence center and a central support PMO. The goal is to perform all tasks effectively while ensuring the necessary flexibility for different departments with different project types.
